Alternative rock is a relatively new style of rock which boomed in popularity in the 90's of the previous century. It originally started as a derivative of the punk rock genre, but has since developed and evolved into the type of rock that did not fit any genre

Alternative rock came about after the era of grunge, which in basic terms was a type of music where people complained over a beat about their miserable lives, and it was a shout against commercialism. Coincidentally, and also ironically, This type of music was commercially successful, and through it Alternative rock came to the fray.

Alternative rock started being popular on university grounds in the 1980's pioneered by the band REM, which was played on university radio's and the like, however, this would always be popular only to the niche audience this way, and this rock only became popular with the dawn of nirvana.

Nirvana was an alternative rock band that needed no explanation, they were known throughout every home, and they introduced the rest of the world to the new era of rock
